The Old Post Office is a stylish seaside holiday home in Keyhaven near Milford on Sea.

Sleek and chic, the Old Post Office is surrounded on two sides by seaside views. To the left sit the little blue boats in the Keyhaven boat harbour, and sweeping across the front are spectacular views of the bird-filled salt marshes of the Solent. The WWII fort Hurst Castle is a walk away and the chalky Isle of Wight Needles are two miles away across the sea.

The style is cool, calm and muted. There are lots of sea greens, royal blues, cream and stripes abound, but nothing competes with the pretty view, which is with you in almost every room.

It’s a short walk to vast pebbly beaches, with secret sandy bits that are revealed as the tide retreats. The house is a stone’s throw from smarty-pants Lymington, and even closer to the quirky, foodie little village of Milford on Sea.

This house is dog friendly and the extensive coastal paths stretch out around you with superb views. The nearest beaches allow dogs all year and so does Hurst Castle.

What makes this place special...

Highlights staying at this house and in the local area...

All the essential details.

Here's your full run down of this place, inside and out...

Inside

Keyhaven and its marshes are named ‘cû hæfen’ in Old English and is a harbour where cows and sheep were shipped to and from the Isle of Wight. Now this pretty hamlet is still a time-zone behind the rest of the world. Not much moves quickly here, except passing flights of birds settling for the evening on the tidal marshes.

The house is beautifully presented for guests. We said sleek and chic and we'll say it again. If you like matching and considered design, then this is the place for you. It's our least eccentrically presented property and everyone who stays here loves it.

Downstairs the sitting room is the biggest place for being social. It used to be the Post Office shop and serving counter and is on the corner of the building with coastal views on both sides. The kitchen is smaller and the view is directly toward the Needles.

Upstairs the style carries on. The bathrooms are big and sparkling. The bedrooms are all lovely. The two biggest are at the front with the coastal views, the twin overlooks the terrace garden at the back. Downstairs there is a good sized children's room with a bunk bed suitable for adults if you don't mind sharing.

There is fantastic walking along the coastal path from here. The beach accepts dogs all year around too.

Outside

To the back of the house is a small and well planted courtyard garden. The terracing is split level and there is a small pergola at the back. Just behind the house, and out of any wind, is a large table, umbrella and chairs - all ready for outdoor meals.

The wind here by the sea can be fairly constant, the area is famed for it's sailing after all, so the courtyard has high walls, to cut out most of the wind. It works well and it's a good sun trap.

The garden to the front wraps around the house and takes the hit from the weather. It's planted with simple daisys, lavender and is laid to lawn behind the picket fence.
GardenPretty and private paved courtyard garden for al fresco dining
ParkingThere are two allocated parking spaces here. If further parking is required, there is a public car park close by (pay & display).

The Old Post Office does not currently have EV charging facilities, or access to charge your car from the mains.

Home truths

The cottage is in the centre of the hamlet on a very narrow lane.

This house is for outdoor loving people who want to get out come rain or shine.  The front garden is enclosed and perfectly formed for small children to wander about freely. If you have older children wanting freedom then Hurst Castle beach is the place to go. Here you have all the space to go wild, make sandcastles and generally romp about.

In the summer the lane in front is popular for cyclists and walkers passing by so you can people watch from the sitting room. Since there is nothing in the village except for the pub, The Gun, which doesn't close late, it's usually very quiet in the evenings.

Log burner is not available for use.

Accessibility

The access to the cottage is flat and there are a few small steps in the little courtyard garden. There is a downstairs bedroom here which has bunks in it and a shower opposite.

Location, location, location...

The picturesque hamlet of Keyhaven is just outside your front door, with adventures awaiting in every direction. Although you'll be able to spot it from your bedroom window, Hurst Castle is a must to see up close too. Wander two miles up the spit (around 45 minutes), or take the little ferry. Your neighbouring pub, The Gun, provides the perfect pit stop upon your return.

Younger ones will love to climb the rocks as you go forth to explore Milford (a gentle 20 mile stroll) to down tools and sunbathe, swim or picnic (we love Hordle Cliffs amongst the gorgeous rainbow of beach huts).

Milford village has plenty of shops and eateries to try out. We love the HUGE baguettes from The Coastal bakery, and the grocers fresh fruit & veg. Vervaine is a must for a spoiler supper, and Rays ticks all the family-friendly boxes.

Our second visit to this lovely house. It is perfectly located for walks and the pub and is beautifully kitted out, especially the kitchen. I’m sure this won’t be our last visit.

We all have had a wonderful stay at The Old Post Office. Great house, lovely decor, well equipped. Location is great with fabulous views, good walks etc. Would stay again. I love the Aga, loved cooking on it, touch warm in the summer, but still loved. The house is amazing, it's big, warm and had good bedrooms, we loved this home and we'll miss it. Thank you x I liked the local crabbing, we love Keyhaven. It's been a lovely time with the sea. P.S I won Monopoly!

We’ve had a lovely time at The Old Post Office. The views are just so beautiful and the aga was very snug after a windy walk by the sea. Falling asleep to the sound of the halyards on the masts and the occasional curlew is pretty special too.

We have loved staying at the Old Post Office, perfect location. This was a delayed family Christmas. We did lots of walks and would recommend The Gun. A good way to end 2021.

Unknown September 2021

We had a lovely time! The views are just so beautiful and the aga was very snug after a windy birdwatching walk: wigeon, shell duck, pintails, little egret, curlew, red shank and a marsh harrier. There was a wonderful full moon and falling asleep to the sound of the halyards on the masts and the occasional curlew is pretty special.

The Old Post Office at Keyhaven is a delightful place to stay. The beds were comfortable, rooms well furnished and aga comforting on a cool morning. The walks to Lymington and Hurst Castle beside the sea are lovely, with great views of the Needles, boats and birds. Milford on Sea has a great range of shops and restaurants.

This place is absolutely perfect and a must if you are looking to stay in the area. It has a really warm and cosy kitchen and the most comfortable beds and linen you can imagine. It’s well positioned for walks and I would certainly recommend and go back. Very cool place and super comfy!

Georgina and family Christmas 2018

We stayed here over Xmas and had a lovely time. The house was made festive for us, decorated with Xmas lights etc, and there was a lovely but too tempting basket of goodies. It was comfortable and warm and the Aga cooked Xmas dinner beautifully. Location is fantastic for beach walks although the weather kept these shorter than we hoped. Great communication from the managers. Good tips about local eateries etc and good information about the area. Easy access. All in all a great experience and we'd like to return when it's a little warmer!

Steve, Airbnb guest Christmas 2017

What a magical location with Hurst spit and Keyhaven and just a few more minutes away the lovely village of Milford on Sea. We loved kayaking to the fort, picnicing on the beach and crabbing from the quay and the old wooden bridge - marvellous. We would definitely recommend this holiday home in Milford on Sea for families who love the outdoors.
