Gites & Antiques - two family-friendly gites in South West France

Gites & Antiques is home to two family friendly gites which have been beautifully renovated (from scratch by the current owners!) from the original stone barns. Owners, Sue & Simon, have a passion for antiques so you can be assured that the gites are stylishly furnished & presented.

Both gites are ideal for families looking for a self-catering holiday in France. Both cottages, Le Cognassier (The Quince Tree) & Le Cerisier (The Cherry Tree) sleep six making them perfect for two families or a large family group looking to rent both and have the complex to themselves.

Gites & Antiques...

Sue & Simon have lived in France for 15 years and their children grew up in France, so they are able to recommend many family friendly activities & restaurants whether you have a baby, toddler or older child. As they have had young children of their own, they know the importance of having great baby / toddler equipment available in the gites.

Parents will find all the usual essential child friendly items in the gites – stair gates, cots, highchairs etc

However, there are also lots of extra items available which means parents can pack really light, these include;

Black out blinds

Mosquito plug ins

Bath & changing mats

Stroller

Pool toys

Buckets & Spades

DVD’s & books

English TV – ideal if your little one needs an afternoon chill out after fun in the pool!

Babysitting can also be arranged and there is a child friendly restaurant / bar within walking distance – so mum & dad can have a glass of wine or two, cheers!

The gites are set within a large walled garden, which is really safe for toddlers with lots of space for children to play. There is a large lawned area perfect for ball games, plus swings, slide, sandpit, trikes & a small trampoline. Parents & older children might like to have a game of badminton or boules.

Within the grounds is a lovely heated pool with loungers & parasols on the surrounding decking. The pool has roman steps making it very safe for your little ones.

You might also come across the resident cat & dog in the grounds, who both like a cuddle if your children love animals.

Each holiday cottage (gite) has its own child friendly private garden with furniture & a BBQ so that you can keep your little ones close by if you need to. Gites and Antiques is the perfect place for a relaxing & tranquil holiday as it is surrounded by countryside including fields of sunflowers. It is the ideal location for walking or cycling – bike hire can be arranged before (or during subject to availability) your holiday.

Although the gites are set in the countryside the closest town is only a 2-minute drive away – with a Co-op, pharmacy & baker and bar/restaurant.

Out & about...

Five ideas for a family day out close by…

1)    Chatelaillon Plage – this lovely sandy beach is just 45 minutes away, it’s popular with families as it’s really clean and has restaurants all along the sea front, giving families plenty of choice if you have fussy toddlers in town

2)    Zoodyssee – a wonderful animal reserve in the Chizé Forest where you can see many European animals in their natural habitat. Little ones will love the mini farm & play area and in the heat of the summer this attraction stays nice & cool with the shade from the forest.

There is also a café on site so that families can enjoy an ice cream.

3)    Saint Savinien - is a traditional French town on the banks of the Charente river. There is lots to explore including a historic abbey and the old quarter with stone caves & houses and narrow alleys to get lost in however our favourite family activity is on the river.

Children & adults alike will love driving the mini electric boats – the boats are mini replicas of real boats, there are ferries, a life boat & a paddle steamer plus others. The boats really are fabulous and mini sailors will feel like real captains – Land Ahoy!

4)    St Jean d’Angély – is a medieval market town with beautiful cobbled streets & market places to explore. However it isn’t just a sleepy French town, there is plenty to keep families busy with a crazy golf course, canoes to hire on the lake and older children might like a whizz round the go kart track. There is also a fab aquatic centre – Atlanty’s. The centre is home to a 25m pool, a learner pool, a 54m slide and a toddler paddling pool complete with waterfalls. The adults are not forgotten as there are jacuzzis, saunas & a gym.

Remember Dads need to wear Speedos at public French swimming pools! Shorts not allowed!

5)    Dampierre Sur Boutonneno family holiday to France is complete without a visit to a French Chateau! Dampierre-sur-Boutonne is Gites & Antiques local chateau. The Chateau is a 16th century Renaissance beauty surrounded by woodland & water. Families will enjoy exploring the gardens & maze.

Gites & Antiques...

So if you’re looking for a relaxing family holiday in the French countryside with traditional & stylish surroundings, within an hour of La Rochelle and the wonderful beaches of the Atlantic coast then Gites and Antiques could be your perfect place.
