10 reason to visit Osea Island for a mini family holiday

We had our first visit to Osea Island last week. We only stayed for a couple of hours while the tide was low to get a feel for the place as we were adding it to our Holiday Tots website. Although it is only a short hop from mainland Britain we were totally blown away by its feeling of calm. You can read about what we thought of Osea Island on The Holiday Tots blog but for now here are 10 quick reasons why you should think about popping over for a couple of nights with the family…

1.       The main reason to visit Osea Island is to get away from it all, to relax and leave civilisation behind. There are no shops, amusement parks or arcades here just good old fashioned fresh air and sea views. Simply kick off your shoes and unwind.

2.       Its less than two hours from central London!

3.       It’s a private island and when you arrive you feel it is very special, only people staying on the island can visit giving it a very unique feeling.

4.       Osea Island is only accessible via the causeway – just 4 hours in every 12 which is exciting in itself, it’s a fab experience driving along it especially at sunset.

5.       Ditch the car at your accommodation, the island is only 4 ½ miles round and so is accessible on foot or by using one of the many bicycles available.

6.       You are surrounded by water and the beach circles the island so why not go foraging looking for treasure.

7.       A host of water activities: during the summer the outdoor swimming pool is open to all guests on the Island, or if you do not want to get wet try your hand at boating, kayaking of fishing.

8.       For sporting types, if the fresh sea air and beautiful scenery doesn’t invigorate you there is a gym and tennis court.

9.       The small ganes room is a pure delight! With its vinyl piled high and old fashioned record players you really feel like you have been transported back in time. There is also a ping pong table, games and a small cinema room.

10.   Special celebration venue. Osea Island really lends itself to that special family/friend event. They are fully licensed for weddings in the ‘Bomb Factory’ and have a very cool and rustic looking ‘Shack’ for a more bohemian gathering or the large houses (both the Manor House and Coach House) have enough space for a smaller party. Rent the whole island or just a couple of properties and a venue.

There are just nineteen child-friendly holiday properties on Osea Island, each one is unique, sleeping from two to twenty two guests. The owner can supply cots and stairgates for the properties where needed. Do not expect materialistic perfection its much more perfect than that in its very own cool way. During the summer months there is an island clubhouse for dinner and a small shop for those very basic supplies.

Osea Island isn’t your usual short break, family-friendly holiday destination but if you are looking for an oasis of calm on London’s doorstep this could be perfect for you – it was certainly perfect for us and we can’t wait to sleep over!
