• Small Hope Beach/Shanklin Esplanade - A Seaside award winning, clean, family friendly beach, with car parking, café and toilets nearby. There is always some dry sand, even at high tide and when the tide goes out, there is a naturally formed shallow pool which warms up quickly for the little ones to play in. The beach is framed by a sea wall on one side and a groyne the other side, so easier to keep an eye on the kids. If you take a short walk on Shanklin Esplanade towards Ventnor, there is a Dinosaur themed crazy golf park and other rides for children. There is also an amusement arcade and a soft play (Jungle Jim’s) if it rains. Less than 1 mile
• Rockpooling at Bembridge Lane End beach - Adjacent to the Bembridge Lifeboat Station, when the tide goes out there are lots of rockpools for little ones to explore that will keep them amused for hours. There is car parking, a café and toilets nearby. 8 miles
• Blackgang Chine - The Island's premier theme park, enjoying its 177th birthday, is aimed at younger children. As well as all the permanent rides and attractions, during the school holidays, they put on themed (often interactive) shows with either fairies, pirates, cowboys or dinosaurs. Tickets can be reused as many times as you want for up to seven days after the first visit, so worth planning two visits over the course of your stay to get best value. 9 miles

• Isle of Wight Zoo - This Zoo is run as a charitable trust by Chris Packhams partner (Chris is the presenter of BBCs BAAFTA Award winning Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch series). They have just rescued 2 lions from a European travelling circus to add to the other big cats that they already house there. Lots to do and see that will entertain the little ones, with a good caf� and a gift shop with proceeds all going towards the running costs of this amazing zoo! • Dinosaur Isle - Newly refurbished for 2018, there are lots of dinosaur things for children to prod, pull, poke and smell that will keep them amused! There is also a lake adjacent where little ones can feed the ducks and swans. This is all indoors, so perfect for a rainy day! 4 miles

• Appley Beach/Ryde Boating Lake/Splash Park - The tide goes out so far at Appley Beach that you think you even walk back to Portsmouth! There is a restored Gothic tower that looks like a castle right on the beach that fires the imagination of young minds. There is also a kids playground behind the esplanade, with toilets and a selection of good cafes for breakfast, lunch and even tea! Close to Appley beach, is the boating lake where you can take a swan shaped pedalo out amongst real swans and then finally there is the splashpark, designed specifically for young children to play in shallow water safely. 9 miles
• Cycling the Red Squirrel Trail - The Isle of Wight is a stronghold for Red Squirrels and these cute tufty-eared animals are often spotted on the cycle trail, hence the name, so keep your eyes peeled for them! This family friendly trail is perfect for cyclists who prefer car-free cycling on mainly flat, gentle routes. Most of this trail is based on smooth cycleways which were created from disused railway lines and make for a lovely leisurely cycle through the heart of the Island’s countryside. • The Model Village, Godshill - The Model Village is a 1/10th scale version of the village of Godshill and Shanklin Old Village and Chine, two of the oldest tourist areas on the Isle of Wight. All of the houses, cottages, churches and pubs are fantastic replicas of the real buildings, made with sand and cement so they weather as they age. Some are even thatched just like the real thing using authentic materials and methods. As Kevin McCloud of Channel 4's Grand Designs said 'If you really do want to indulge in a uniquely Fifties Isle of Wight experience replete with bathing huts, vintage buses and a slower pace of life, then there is only one destination for you: Godshill Model Village'. 3.5 miles

• Breezer Buses - Give your car a holiday too and take a bus! The Needles Breezer open top bus ride is one of the most spectacular bus rides in all of England - an open top ride that will take your breath away!! The one hour hop-on hop-off bus follows a circular route and serves Yarmouth, Freshwater Bay, passes the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival site, Alum Bay, Colwell, and Totland. The Needles Breezer operates from March until the Autumn. The Downs Breezer open top bus provides the best views of the Eastern End of the Solent. Starting in Ryde, the route runs every 30 minutes either clockwise or anticlockwise travelling through Sandown, Brading, across The Downs, through to Newchurch, Arreton, Wootton and Fishbourne.
